For this week’s Assignment 3, the multimedia object I chose to recreate and improve based on my current understanding of multimedia learning principles is an assignment for my semester-long Econ-381 class that presents a slide show on the use of air pollution control policies in economics. My initial PowerPoint presentation included only textual content related to the topic, and each page had much textual content and was complex. Therefore, I analyzed and recreated a new PowerPoint presentation based on the principles of multimedia learning to make the learning experience better and more effective for the learners when using this slide show. Next, I will explain my improvements in detail based on the principles of multimedia learning.
The first significant change I made was based on the Multimedia Principle and the Split-attention Principle, Mayer’s Multimedia Principle, which states that multimedia learning refers to the simultaneous presentation of text and pictures. During our study period, one of the very effective ways to improve learning efficiency was to combine text and pictures, including the Cognitive theory mentioned in our third week of study, that people’s brains are limited in their acceptance of knowledge and can only process a limited amount of information in one channel at a time. So my first change was to reduce the amount of text in my original content and add images related to the text content. Because it is mentioned in the principle of distraction-attention that “people learn better when text and pictures are physically and temporally combined.” So in order to make my PowerPoint presentation more effective for learning, I combined the original single text-only presentation with pictures and improved it again as a way to improve the learning effect.
My second change is based on the Signaling principle, in which it is mentioned that when we add the critical information and its organizational clues to the original multimedia learning, it can improve the learning effect more effectively, so I select the essential information from a large amount of text and reduce some other content that is not particularly necessary, to This allows learners to grasp the critical information in the first place and provides them with a more transparent and more precise idea of what they want to say.
The third change I made was to reorganize the content, using the principles of Coherence, signalling, spatial contiguity, temporal contiguity, and redundancy when we combine images and text that highlight essential material and relate to the content of the text. When we combine images and text that highlight essential material and relate to the content of the text and make it easier for the learner to read the information simultaneously, rather than scattering it across the page, this way of reading can improve learning efficiency.
The fourth change is based on the principles of personalization, voice, embodiment, and image. The main content of the original speech is presented in text, and a single textual expression is not very effective for the learners to bring practical learning effect, when the teaching content through the way of speech, adding When the content is narrated by voice, the learners should learn. Therefore, I summarized the main content of each chapter based on the Signaling principle and then presented the other explanatory parts in the form of lectures to improve the learning efficiency.
Here is my Edite PowerPoint with the presentation!
